this subject has come up a few times with some of my like minded friends recently, what with it all being over and most of us having not known each other when it started.
as for me, i was in middle school at the time, and it took me a little while to get into it. i was going through my non-conformist phase and all that, and i didn't think that something that everyone else liked could possibly be any good. then a friend gave me the first book for a birthday present, i felt obligated to read it, and the rest is history.
what about you?

I can't quite remember how I first got into the series... I think it was actually through hearing about the first film that I became interested in it, and from that I started to read the books. I had heard of it before then though, back in my final year of high school (2000), when other people were talking about it.

When I was in elementary school we had to do these awful reading logs that made reading a chore. Because of this assignment I refused to do any reading outside school and figured Harry Potter was stupid just like all the other books aimed at my age group. Anyway, my brother had already read the four that were out at the time so my mom decided to take us to see the first movie and I was blown away. I immediately picked up the second book (out of laziness I decided I didn't need to read the first one since I already knew the story) and burned through it in a matter of days. Same thing with the third and fourth. When I realized that nobody had any idea when the fifth book would come out I went back and read the first. It was the first time I had ever craved a book. ;D

I read the first book on a flight to D.C. in 2000. My mom bought the first book and gave it to me to read on the flight...I thought it was a stupid little kids book, until i read it

I saw the first movie in theaters when it came out (I was in high school), with some friends and became interested in wanting to read the books (I'd seen the books in the store a couple times before but never stopped to look at them). One of my friends who loved the books got the first one for me as a Christmas/bday present. Just like the movie, I loved the first book and became hooked on both . Also, when I was a freshman in college, one of my classes was on Harry Potter and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (the show). Since I hadn't had my books with me, I had to buy another set (books 2-4 went to my mom). I asked one of my friends who lives in the UK if she could get me a copy of the Philosopher's Stone and I sent her the second Sorcerer's Stone copy I had because I'd totally forgotten to look for it when I had visited London.

Well my mom never let me read it when i was younger, the magic that was in it and whatnot then at age 22 I decided to rebel and read them! well I could have read them sooner, but I didn't have any of the books or the money to buy them, and my library had a lame selection of them I got in the reading mood, and always wanted to read HP because I had a feeling I would love it! My boyfriend had all the books so I just took them from him and read away ;D

my friend got me into it. well, she was trying to anyway. then my dad brought it home on VHS so i caved in and watched it and like it. then i started reading the bools because i didn't want to wait for the next movie to come out. then i got caught up and waited for the next book to come out. it was so exciting when a new book was coming out or movie. i would come here to scream a out it or squeel.
