OOC: The official JKR answer (in an post OotP interview) is that you had to let the death really sink in before seeing them. She also said, on a more practical note that she couldn't very well introduce them at the end of GoF after Cedric's death.

Ack no way! You'd might be able to get away with that if they had just changed the wings to bat wings, but they have draconic heads, are carniverous, and have a couple magical abilities. (invisibility to those whom have never seen death, knowing to find a person/location).
Pegasus was originally a Greek creation, he was supposed to be the son of Medusa (that snakey haired woman that turned people to stone with her gaze) and Posiodon (the god of the sea). Apparently she was pregnant with Pegasus and (can't remember the other son's name) but when she got turned into the big ugly, she couldn't give birth to something that was so good (or maybe it was because her lower half was a snake, depending on what version of her you find). When Ulysses (I think it was him?) cut off her head, two drops of blood fell and became Pegasus and (dumb brother's name). So Pegasus is actually a Hero (cross between a god and a mortal).
More than you needed to know I bet.

thats why she is the magical creatures teacher! OOOOHHHH MAJOR MAJOR flaw here... the end of book 4.... when Ron/Hermione and Harry were on the look out for the 'horseless carrigages' Hermione went to talk to Victor.... Ron was tryin to keep his eye on them.. while Harry looked out for the horseless carriages..... WHY didnt Harry see them then? I mean.. he had seen Cedrick die... and yet.. he didnt see em... why is that?

That could have been due to the whole "sinking in" thing, he was still kinda stunned by everything that happened and hadn't absorbed it yet.

Actually, that's movie contamination. In the book, Harry does not actually see Quirrel die. In the book Harry passes out before Quirrell dies.
Also, in the movie Quirrel dies because of the burns, In the book he dies because Voldemort leaves his body after Voldemort had become so integrated into his body.

I thought the first movie was a mochery(sp?) to the book! I think JK just wanted to hurry up and make the movie...the second movie though, that was a lot better.

I like the fact that the thestrals didn't have any pupils.......the entire description of them was vivid....I wish I could draw well, then I'd be able to get all these images out of my head.....
